This is heavy work involving skilled labor. Work involves physically locating water and sewer mains, service lines, valves, and meters. Employee is responsible for performing prescribed work in a safe manner and on schedule. General knowledge of various maintenance and construction tasks. The employee performs general underground utility related work requiring the use of hand tools, power tools, and construction equipment with frequent use of light to medium automotive equipment; responsible for the upkeep and efficient operation of the tools and/or electronic equipment used. Instructions are received written or orally and work is performed under the supervision of the Distribution Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent. Operates light- to medium-duty trucks, pipe locators, metal detectors, magnetic locators, electronic locators, ground-penetrating radar, and GPS locators. Maintains records of work (drawing and measurements) for updating record maps, plus documenting date, time of work and prepares reports. May be required to operate power saws, small and large tapping machines, may operate tractor/loader and other equipment used in underground utility related work. Assists Maintenance Worker III, Supervisor II, and maintenance personnel with preventative and constructive maintenance projects. Performs janitorial work such as sweeping, mopping, windows, vacuuming and general cleanup. Installs water and sewer mains, service lines, meters, fire hydrants. Performs landscape restoration involving asphalt, concrete, and sod. Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY AND SKILLS
Knowledge of tools and equipment used in pipeline construction and maintenance. Considerable knowledge of general safety rules regarding traffic control regulations, D.O.T. regulations, trench excavations, and precautions to be taken when working near other utilities (electric, gas, telephone, etc.). Ability to operate light- to medium-duty trucks, tapping machines, air and hydraulic equipment, and related construction equipment. Must be able to read maps and blueprints, understand and follow oral and written instructions without close supervision. Must have the physical strength and agility to perform heavy manual labor. Use of locating equipment with limited skills in various utility maintenance and construction tasks. Must have computer skills or the aptitude to learn.
