This is skilled work in the operation of heavy automotive equipment and/or complex highway construction and maintenance equipment. Employees are responsible for doing work prescribed speedily, effectively and without damage to equipment. Employees may rotate among the various pieces of equipment as the work load changes or they may be permanently assigned to a specific piece of equipment. Employees are expected to use considerable judgment and skill in carrying out general instructions and in performing work to exact measurements. Work is reviewed by observation of results obtained. Operates backhoe, mobile crane or dragline, bulldozer, slope mower, and other heavy pieces of equipment. Drives heavy trucks. Operates dragline to clean ditches, dig ditches, demolish structures. Performs grading work on roads and other work as assigned. Performs light maintenance work on above pieces of equipment. Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skill
Comprehensive knowledge of the operation of heavy pieces of equipment used in heavy construction, earth moving, demolitions and the like. Comprehensive knowledge of traffic and safety rules and regulations. Comprehensive understanding of the techniques and practices applied to the operation of heavy pieces of equipment to avoid accidents under varied work environments. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to perform the job tasks in an efficient manner under unfavorable conditions.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS
Both hands dexterity and legs coordination in the operation of heavy pieces of equipment. Excellent hand/eye coordination. Excellent near and far vision. Good hearing.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Constantly working outside under adverse weather conditions of cold, heat, humidity and rain.
WORK HAZARDS
Work on public areas under an environment of pedestrian and vehicular traffic in close proximity of other workers and power lines, gas lines, etc. in the vicinity.
