CREWLEADER - PUBLIC WORKS/STORMWATER

This is semi-skilled laboring work in leading a laboring function within a department involving construction and grounds maintenance programs.  Incumbent is responsible for working with and leading laborers and equipment operators engaged in construction and maintenance projects.  Work is performed under the general supervision of a superior.  Work is reviewed in progress and upon completion by a supervisor. Operates backhoe, compactors, trucks, concrete mixers, jackhammers, and other equipment related to the stormwater trade. Repairs and replaces stormwater piping and catch basins and vaults. Inspects work in progress, and may modify or adjust work methods, crew sizes and related factors with the consensus of the supervisor to insure that projects are completed on time. Installs new piping for stormwater abatement. May supervise a group of workers in repair work on streets, curbs or drainage projects.  Keeps records of time on projects and prepares reports.  Performs related work as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY AND SKILLS
Knowledge of accepted methods and practices of maintenance and construction for streets, storm drainage and rights-of-way.  Knowledge of safety procedures related to the trade.  Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.  Must be able to assign and supervise the work of subordinates.  Must have sufficient strength and agility to perform the tasks assigned.  Must possess elementary and routine skills in general maintenance and construction work.  Must be skilled in the use and care of pertinent tools and pieces of equipment.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS

Constant walking and standing.  Use of both hands and fingers with dexterity.  Very frequent light lifting thirty (30) pounds or less, frequent heavy lifting thirty (30) pounds or more.  Frequent light weight carrying thirty (30) pounds or less.  Reaching above shoulders, kneeling, bending, and squatting.  Good hand/eye coordination.  Far/near vision.  Good hearing.  Constant working outside under adverse weather conditions of cold, heat, humidity and rain.  Work on public areas in an environment of pedestrian and vehicular traffic in close proximity to other workers.  Requires the use of a safety vest, work shoes, safety glasses, work gloves, shield cap, back support belt.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications in order to be considered for this position.
