This is a complex technical position which installs, modifies, and makes minor repairs to microcomputer hardware and software systems and provides technical assistance and training to system users. Monitor data communications network to ensure that the network is available to all system users and resolves data communications problems. Evaluates and tests vendor-supplied software packages for servers and microcomputers to determine compatibility with existing system, ease of use, and if software meets the user needs. Install, monitor, and maintain server hardware, software and network operating systems to ensure availability, reliability, and data integrity for all users. Provides microcomputer hardware and software support to end-users. Reviews new hardware and software proposals to determine integration with current systems. Tune LAN servers and provide server and printer access, security and password administration, and network operating system troubleshooting. Provides hardware and software training and trouble shoots potential problems. Works a variable schedule and overtime as required based on operational and project implementation needs. Assists in determining the cause of microcomputer and server hardware, software, network, and operating system malfunctions. Confers with technical personnel and other departmental personnel in network planning and technology project implementations. Assists in data, software, hardware, and network recovery and performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Ability to provide technical resources focused on network analysis and design for LAN/WAN integration. Must have the ability to effectively communicate and interact with all levels of employees and officials in both written and oral presentations. Able to work with limited supervision, establish goals, prioritize problems and manage time effectively. Must have an extensive background in networking, PC software and hardware and be able to maintain and repair computer related equipment. Needs to have flexibility to change routines and follow detailed instructions. In depth knowledge of MS Server and client operating systems, Active Directory, Exchange, SQL, Microsoft Office, TCP/IP, and IP Subnetting is required. Working knowledge of Cisco and VMware is desired. This position will require knowledge of the following: basic LAN/WAN operations, operating systems, security policy and administration concepts, network topologies, communications protocols, server, client and network operating systems; protocol analyzers and remote monitoring tools.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS
Heavy carrying thirty (30) to sixty (60) pounds. Use of fingers, both hands required. Good vision required. Must be able to operate and drive a motor vehicle. Ability to bend, stoop, kneel and work in cramped spaces. Ability to use hands, wrists, and fingers to write and type. Must be able to see, write, type, speak, and comprehend conversations and symbols in English. Must be able to read and comprehend technical manuals. Must be able to read fine print on computer paper, computer equipment and see lights on equipment.
