This is technical work in the operation of an advanced wastewater treatment facility on an assigned shift. An employee in this classification is responsible for the proper operation and care of a variety of specialized wastewater equipment. Work involves proper operation and regulation of plant equipment and processes to maintain compliance with the requirements of the regulatory agencies. Work includes collecting samples for the laboratory, recording meter readings, operating chemical feed rates and maintaining process control parameters. This employee is required to know and to work in accordance with established operating procedures, however, the individual must have the ability to depart from the procedure under the direction of a supervisor. Works under the direction of the shift Lead Operator; regulates flow and chemical feed equipment; monitors operations daily; performs checklists; takes meter readings and computes accordingly; monitors biological activity and trends. Performs minor repairs to mechanical equipment; reports breakdowns to the Lead Operator of his/her assigned shift. This employee maintains the optimum plant operation. Work involves some laboratory work to perform monitoring tests such as Cl2 residuals, alkalinity, pH, process control testing and dissolved oxygen, evaluation of test results and implementation of necessary adjustments. Performs preventative and corrective maintenance to plant equipment, buildings and grounds. Performs related work as required. Must be able to work shift work and weekends.
Knowledge, ability and skills
Knowledge of advanced level of practices of public utilities wastewater treatment including plant operations, mechanical applications, laboratory analyses and preventative maintenance Ability to read and understand written and oral instructions. Must be able to work with a minimum of supervision. Ability to inspect and assist in troubleshooting machinery, pumps, meters and charts, detect flaws and defects in operations, maintain complete and accurate records on an assigned shift.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS
Constant walking, standing and bending; constant use of both hands and fingers; very frequent light lifting, light carrying, climbing (legs and arms) and reaching above shoulder; very frequent use of good near vision and good hearing; frequent moderate lifting and carrying, climbing (legs only), need for good distant vision, and the ability to distinguish basic colors; frequent straight pulling, pushing, kneeling, and stooping.
