Full-Time position. This is heavy manual work involving limited skills in various maintenance and construction tasks. The employee performs treatment plant maintenance, building maintenance, and assists with some janitorial and grounds keeping duties when required. Employee performs laboring tasks requiring the use of hand tools, power tools and equipment, and light automotive equipment. Employee is responsible for the upkeep and efficient operation of the tools and/or equipment used. Employee works under the direction of the Utility Mechanic II. Instructions may be received orally or written. Routine scheduled work is performed with considerable independence. More difficult work is performed under supervision.Works with wastewater treatment plant maintenance personnel performing preventative, corrective, and constructive maintenance tasks. Operates hand and power tools, wrenches, hoists, jacks, paint brushes, air compressors, lubrication equipment, pumps, and miscellaneous lawn maintenance equipment. Operates small tractor as needed for a variety of maintenance and landscaping projects. Performs janitorial work such as sweeping, mopping, cleaning windows, painting, vacuuming and general cleanup. Occasionally applies fertilizers, herbicides and insecticides, maintains landscape plants, pruning and trimming of shrubs and trees. Must have the ability to work in cooperation with plant maintenance and operations personnel and/or outside contractors when duties require a group effort. Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Knowledge of tools and equipment used in water and wastewater treatment plant maintenance. Knowledge of building and grounds maintenance. Knowledge of landscape maintenance equipment. Ability to operate lawn maintenance equipment and small tractor. Must have the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and have physical strength and agility to perform heavy manual labor.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS
Must be able to walk, stand, kneel, bend, lift and carry more than fifty (50) pounds, climb, push, pull, and balance. Must have good dexterity, vision, and hearing. Must be able to work inside and outdoors in all types of weather. Must be able to work above and below ground level and on wet, uneven, and slippery surfaces. Must be able to use depth perception and reach above shoulders.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION REQUIREMENTS
Constant work outside on uneven surfaces, in or with moving objects; very frequently working in heat, high humidity, in or with noisy conditions with fumes or gases, grease or oils, in or with moving vehicles, with vibrations, odors, and works alone. Frequently working in dampness or chilliness, in or with dusty conditions, with treatment plant chemicals, on slippery surfaces, with feet or hands in the water.
WORK HAZARDS
Working around moving treatment plant equipment and lawn maintenance equipment. Working with or around treatment plant chemicals.
SAFETY EQUIPMENT USED OR NEEDED
ANSI 241 Steel toe safety shoes, rubber boots/gloves, rainwear, hard hats, safety glasses, goggles, and any other personal protective equipment as required.
