MAINTENANCE WORKER II/SIGN TECHNICIAN

This is semi-skilled manual work in construction and maintenance activities and services.  Employee must consistently perform senior level, semi-skilled work on Public Works equipment, plants, buildings, and grounds for a minimum of six (6) to nine (9) months; must have demonstrated excellent skill and safe use of all hand tools and equipment in performance of all work tasks.  Employees in this class are expected to work without close supervision although work is subject to inspection during progress and upon completion. Assists in brick, masonry and cement work construction; repairs sidewalks, curbs and gutters and performs other general cement and brickwork.  Performs specialized mechanical procedures and keeps written records of materials used. Performs a variety of semi-skilled carpentry, painting and manual work incidental to construction and maintenance activities. Operates power mowers, tractors, back hoes, trucks, air compressors, power saws and pneumatic equipment efficiently and safely. Assists in laying pipe and operating pipe handling equipment. Performs related work as required, including duties of a lower classification. Remove, repair and replace regulatory signs including but not limited to street signs, stop signs and speed limit signs as outlined in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications to be considered:

Knowledge, ability and skills: 
Extensive knowledge of the methods, tools, pieces of equipment and materials used in Public Works general maintenance, utility construction and building structures. To operate trucks, concrete saws, chain saws, backhoes, and other pieces of equipment of the trade. Ability to understand and operate computers and computer software in the production of regulatory signs as needed. Able to understand and follow oral or written instructions.  Ability to perform heavy manual labor under adverse weather conditions.  Ability to be accident free.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:
Constant standing, walking, kneeling, bending and squatting. Use of both hands and fingers, very frequent light lifting 30 pounds or less, frequent heavy lifting 30-plus pounds. Very frequent light carrying 30 pounds or less, reaching above shoulders. Good hand/eye coordination,  near/far vision, and good hearing.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION REQUIREMENT:
Constantly working outside under adverse weather conditions of cold, heat, humidity and rain.

WORK HAZARDS:
Work on public areas under an environment of pedestrian and vehicular traffic with pieces of equipment with moving parts and in close proximity to co-workers.

SAFETY EQUIPMENT USED OR NEEDED:
Safety vest, working shoes, safety glasses, work gloves, shield cap, and back support belt.
