METER READER - FINANCE / FIELD SERVICES

This is field clerical work accurately reading water meters and recording water consumption on established meter reading devices for proper billing.  Employees follow designated routes and receive instructions from the supervisor.  Employees refer questions to the supervisor. Reads water meters on an assigned route and records readings. Makes special readings as required. Checks to see that meters are functioning properly. Reports defective meters to his/her supervisor. Clears mud, debris and other matter from the meter boxes. Checks to determine consistency of meter readings. Reports unusual circumstances to his/her supervisor. Prepares diagrams showing locations of meters in relation to newly built houses. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with city officials and employees, the general public and representatives of other agencies toward the accomplishment of assigned projects. Gain the trust and cooperation of others to effectively communicate concepts and ideas. Work effectively with a variety of staff, other governmental representatives, and the public; deal tactfully and courteously with the public and maintain composure in difficult and/or stressful situations. Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications in order to be considered for this position:

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skill
Must have knowledge of the geographical area of the City of Cocoa and central Brevard County area.  Must be able to write legibly.  Must be able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the general public.  Must be able to operate a vehicle in a safe manner.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS
Must be in good physical health.  This position requires extensive walking, bending kneeling, stooping, pulling and pushing on a daily basis.  Walking will be an all-day condition of this position.  Must be able to use hand tools to clean the meter boxes. Must be able to lift thirty-five (35) to forty-five (45) pounds on a repeat daily basis.  Requires working alone or in close proximity with other employees.  Requires working in varying climate conditions. Ability to maneuver quickly in and out of vehicle.  Requires good communication skills.  Requires manual dexterity in use of meter reading devices and in making basic diagrams.
