MAINTENANCE WORKER III - UTILITIES / WATER FIELD OPERATIONS

Full-Time position. This is skilled laboring work involved in leading a construction/meter shop/maintenance crew, including equipment operators. Must have skills in various maintenance and construction tasks. The employee performs and oversees general underground utility-related work, grounds-keeping, some building maintenance, and janitorial work.  The employee performs laboring tasks requiring the use of hand tools, power tools, testing equipment and construction equipment with occasional use of light to heavy automotive equipment; responsible for the upkeep and efficient operation of the tools and/or equipment used.  Instructions are received orally or written.  Work is performed with considerable independence.  Difficult work is performed under the supervision of the Supervisor II.  All work subject to inspection of Supervisor II. Installs water mains, service lines, meters, fire hydrants and backflow preventers.Investigates and resolves customer complaints and concerns.Drives heavy trucks with trailers and other equipment used in grounds maintenance and underground utility-related work.Assists the Supervisor II and maintenance personnel with preventative and constructive maintenance projects.Operates tractor loaders for loading and spreading dirt and for a variety of projects.Operates power mowers, edgers, weedeaters, power saws, and small and large tapping machines.Performs landscape restoration involving asphalt, concrete and sod.Performs janitorial work, such as sweeping, mopping, window cleaning, vacuuming and general cleaning.Maintains accurate written logs and records. 
 
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Knowledge of tools and equipment used in pipeline construction and maintenance, building and grounds maintenance. Knowledge of map reading, safety rules regarding traffic control, trench excavations and cross connection control policy is essential. Ability to operate trucks/trailers, tractors, loaders, tapping machines, air and hydraulic equipment, lawn maintenance equipment and related construction equipment.  Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions and maintain written records and logs. Must have the physical strength and agility to perform heavy manual labor. Must possess limited skills in various utility maintenance and construction tasks.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS
Constant light lifting, light carrying, use of fingers and both hands; pushing; walking; standing; driving trucks and operating tractor loader, mowers, power saws, mudhog pumps, weed eaters; very frequently moderate lifting, moderate carrying, use of depth perception; frequent heavy lifting and carrying; reaching above shoulder, use of good near and distant vision, good hearing; kneeling, bending and stooping.  Must dig with shovel; climb into and out of excavations.


ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION REQUIREMENTS
Constant work outside on uneven surfaces, in or with moving objects; very frequently working in heat, high humidity, day or night, in all types of weather, in or with noisy conditions, with fumes or gases, grease or oils, in or with moving vehicles, with vibrations, odors, and working alone or with others.  Frequently working in dampness, chilliness, dusty, wet and dry conditions, in excavation or trenches, manholes, meter pits and tanks, on slippery surfaces; with feet or hands in the water.


WORK HAZARDS
Working around moving tractors, backhoes, trenchers, boom trucks, and general construction equipment.  Frequently works in and around highway traffic.


SAFETY EQUIPMENT USED OR NEEDED
Rubber and leather steel-toe boots, rubber and leather gloves, goggles, rainwear, hard hats, safety glasses, safety vest, respirator, hearing protection.
